Emergency Response & Preparedness Checklist: What to Do in the Event of an Emergency Incident

Emergencies can happen at any time. Use this checklist as a quick guide to protect personnel, maintain clear communication, and ensure proper response.

Step One: Ensure Safety

Stop all operations

☐ Bring all activity to a safe stop

☐ Secure equipment and work areas

☐ Confirm no equipment or processes are at risk


Check for injuries

☐ Assess yourself and others for injuries

☐ Call emergency services if anyone is hurt


Create a safe distance

☐ Move away from hazards, unstable equipment, or dangerous areas

☐ Keep personnel clear of fire, chemicals, or debris

Step Two: Notify the Proper Contacts

Internal notifications

☐ Inform supervisors or the person in charge

☐ Alert the control center or safety team


External notifications

☐ Call 911 if there are injuries, fire, chemical spills, or public safety risks

☐ Notify local authorities if the incident affects public areas


Information to provide

☐ Exact location

☐ Description of the incident

☐ Any visible hazards

☐ Whether injuries are present

Step Three: Secure the Area

☐ Establish safe boundaries

☐ Shut down equipment and processes as needed

☐ Remove ignition sources or other risks

☐ Monitor for leaks, spills, or unsafe conditions

☐ Keep unauthorized personnel away until cleared

Step Four: Document the Scene

☐ Record observations when safe

☐ Take photos if appropriate

☐ Note hazards or contributing factors

☐ Collect witness statements when possible

☐ Document only confirmed facts, avoid assumptions

Step Five: Assist Emergency Responders


☐ Provide responders with all necessary information

☐ Point out hazards and give a clear overview

☐ Maintain communication with internal teams

☐ Ensure only authorized personnel enter the area

Step Six: Follow Post-Incident Procedures

☐ Complete all required reporting

☐ Participate in review or debrief meetings

☐ Document repairs, inspections, and corrective actions
